Cloud CCTV or local recording? Start with what you need to keep.

Where video is managed and where it is stored are different decisions. Understanding both helps you choose a CCTV system that fits your operation.

The distinction that changes the conversation

You can manage cameras through a cloud platform while recordings remain on local equipment. You can also view a local recorder remotely without it becoming a cloud-storage system. “Cloud CCTV” is useful shorthand, but it does not describe every detail of an installation.

Start with three questions: where is the footage recorded, who can access it, and what happens if the recorder or internet connection becomes unavailable? The answers matter more than a label.

Local recording: footage held at the property

A network video recorder, supported camera storage or other on-site equipment can hold footage locally. Capacity, recording schedules, image quality and the number of cameras determine the recording period.

This can suit a single premises with suitable equipment space and an agreed approach to security and maintenance. Remote viewing may still be available. The design should consider what happens if recording equipment is damaged, removed or loses power; local storage alone is not an off-site backup.

Cloud storage: an off-site recording option

Supported cloud recording or backup can put selected footage outside the premises and make it available to authorised users. It may be valuable for a distributed estate or where protecting recordings from a local equipment loss is important.

Check exactly what is included: continuous footage or selected events, which cameras, the retention period and the recurring service cost. Upload capacity and connection availability need to match the intended operation. A cloud subscription cannot compensate for an unsuitable network.

A combined approach can be the right fit

Some installations combine local recording with selected cloud backup or storage services. That can support convenient remote management while keeping an appropriate recording arrangement at the site.

Avigilon Alta Video offers cloud management with recording and storage options that depend on the deployment. Ajax systems can use NVR-based recording, with cloud options for supported products and services. We verify the proposed equipment and plan rather than assume every device behaves the same way.

Choose around a real incident

Imagine that you need footage from an entrance yesterday evening. Can the right person find it, is the detail sufficient, and can they export it securely? Then consider the same task after an internet outage or recorder failure.

For a shop, the priority may be clear entrance and transaction-area footage. For a multi-site operator, consistent access and permissions may be just as important. For any site, retention should be purposeful and access controlled.

Let Digilec design the whole arrangement

We help you compare camera coverage, storage, connectivity, permissions and ongoing support together. That produces a more useful specification than choosing “cloud” or “local” first and trying to make the building fit later.

Bring us your current equipment details, the areas you need to cover and the recording period you are considering. We can review the options for a new installation or a measured upgrade.
